Hurling Season Starts!

We Love Hurling!!!

Interview1

The school hurling season is upon us once more. After the wet weather and tough training in the circle under Mr. McDonald the Joey’s squad began their season yesterday with a tough away game against Gaelscoil Bóroimhe.

Conditions yesterday did not suit our attacking style of play and our opponents were a little taller and a little stronger. . . From the very first whistle we were on the defensive as our opponents scored a quick goal followed by another quick point!

This seemed to kick the Joey’s team into life and the defence, led by the spirited Seán Kelly began to tighten up on their men. Midfield, led by the skillful Anthony Grey (three times Joey’s Hurler of The Year) also began moving the ball up the field well and Joey’s were right back in the game!

Following some controversial refereeing decisions the home side gradually extended their lead and managed to stay in front of us all the way until half time. . .

We took a break, passed around some water bottles and Mr.McDonald made some inspired tactical changes . . .At the beginning of the second half Joey’s started like a tornado!  The Swords Gaelscoil were taken aback by our levels of ferocity! Following a free flowing move the sliotar ended up in our full forward line. . . A goal-line scramble ensued with video replay proving that Ross King got the final touch to score our opening goal. . .

Mr. McDonald points out some strategic changes to his subs!

The brave Joey’s team battled throughout the second half and we continued to close the gap . . .  Declan Kelly showed his experience in front of goal with a well placed ground stroke that raised another green flag. At this stage Joey’s were hot on the heels of Gaelscoil Bóroimhe however time ran out and we went home defeated. The final score was Joey’s 2 goals and 1 point, Gaelscoil Bóroimhe 3 goals and three points.

We leaned a lot of lessons , picked up a bit more experience and the boys are confident that our next game in Fairview park shall result in another strong performance. . .

The official Man of The Match was Eddie Gavin who showed great bravery and no small amount of skill whilst in goals. Among the nominations for the award were teak tough wing back Cian Maloney and flying half forward Jack Dillon. . .
